Granite Countertops - The Resin Process
It is no secret that granite is the most popular choice when it comes to countertops. That’s because granite is beautiful, durable and affordable for many consumers. It also comes in hundreds of different colors provided by Mother Nature. In fact, over the years, there has been a large increase in the amount of colors available. This is partly due to newer technologies used in the extracting process, as well as the development of a resining process for slabs.
So what exactly is a resining process you may ask? Well let me explain. Resining involves the applying of epoxy resins to honed and dry slabs, which help fill in tiny surface pitting, or fissures that naturally occur in the stone. Once the resin is applied, the slabs are cured by going through large heated ovens. They are then sent through polishing lines, where they are polished and prepared for shipment to suppliers, etc.
The resining process allows slabs that once may have been rejected for being too brittle, or fragile to be much more safe and sturdy for shipping to be available now for consumers. Today there are way more color choices available than there was 10-20 years ago. This is great for consumers who like variety and a lot of choices.
